Did you know that the earliest tributes to mothers dates back to the spring festivals in which the
Greeks dedicated to Rhea (the mother of many deities) and to the offerings ancient Romans made to
their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele? Christians celebrated their festival on the 4th Sunday in Lent in
honor of Mary, the mother of Christ. In England it was expanded to include all mothers and they
called in Mothering Sunday.

It wasn't until about 150 years ago that an Appalachian homemaker named Anna Jarvis organized a
day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her town. She believed it would be best vindicated
by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day"

About 15 years later, Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic,
organized a peace rally and encouraged mothers to participate because she believed they bore the
loss of human life more harshly than anyone else.

In 1905 when Anna Jarvis passed away, her daughter also named Anna, began a campaign to have
the life long work of her mother memorialized. It was her mother's wish that some day there could be
a special day just for mothers. Anna asked Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to help create a special
day to honor mothers.

In 1908 at one of the first church services in West Virginia to honor Anna's mother, Anna passed out
her mother's favorite flower, the white carnation. 5 years later, the House of Representatives adopted
a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother's Day. In
1914 Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.

People first started observing Mother's Day by attending church services, writing letters to their
mothers and then eventually they started sending greeting cards, presents and flowers. As the
popularity of gift giving became more common, Anna Jarvis became very mad that the special meaning
of this day was being replaced by greed and profit. In 1923, she filed a lawsuit to stop Mother's Day.
Before Anna died, she admitted she regretted ever starting the Mother's Day tradition.

the month has become the most popular day of the year to take your mother out to dinner and the
